ZigBee is an open global standard used to connect consumers and commercial devices to the electric grid in support of energy efficiency programs prompted by governments and energy providers around the world. These programs use ZigBee to create two-way communication and control of ZigBee devices inside of homes, giving energy providers a "last meter" wireless connection into homes. ZigBee links devices starting with the energy provider meter and reaches thermostats, household appliances, heating/cooling, lighting systems and other household appliances. For energy providers, ZigBee enables a standards-based approach to a myriad of energy efficiency programs.
ZigBee is being selected around the world as a key technology required for energy management and efficiency. Over 30 million meters have been committed by numerous leading utilities to run ZigBee Smart Energy by the end of next year. Policymakers are including it as a key component in energy legislation and energy providers are expecting it to play a critical role in energy efficiency programs by connecting the energy provider to their consumers and their residential devices. The Department of Energy has also publicly acknowledged that ZigBee Smart Energy is in the running to becoming the required standard for U.S. smart grid development.
Bob Heile from ZigBee Alliance will discuss:
- The impact of accelerated smart grid development to corporations and consumers
- ZigBee's role in addressing energy efficiency programs for energy providers
- How an open global standard like ZigBee can be the catalyst for change

| | 3:00 pm | Collaborative Energy: Informed Communities of Building Systems | AHR Expo | Time: 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm Room: S320G/H Exhibitor: AHR Expo Description: New smart grid standards exchange information rather than control signals with buildings-based systems. Three information exchanges, (1) energy scarcity, quality, and value, (2) grid and market events and (3) live energy usage information are the basis of collaborative energy. Building systems from BAS to home appliance to consumer electronics will be expected to share such information as well. A common information component to share schedules and calendars between building systems, enterprise activities, smart grid, and financial markets is just now coming out of the IETF.
Systems will cooperate as autonomous agents using advanced energy profiles to move beyond limiting energy use to aggregate load shaping within the building. Load shape and load control will maximize the value of distributed energy resources (DER) and Near Grid Buildings. Loose integration will create a premium on autonomous performance and inter-system collaboration. Energy and schedule aware systems will compete on richness of user interface. | | 9:00 am | Solar Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Workshop | International Energy Agency | Time: 9:00 am - 3:15 pm Room: S330E Exhibitor: International Energy Agency Description: Buildings space heating and cooling and water heating are responsible for a significant portion of energy consumption in the USA. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), in the commercial sector, space heating and cooling are responsible for 40% of total energy consumption and in the residential sector almost 70% of total energy consumption is due to such applications. Solar cooling is a particularly attractive option to reduce such consumption due to the natural match between solar radiation availability and buildings cooling loads. In the last few years, more than 100 solar cooling systems have been installed worldwide, most of them with cooling power above 30 ton. The Solar Heating and Cooling Programme of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has led collaborative efforts on the development of solar cooling systems and applications for the last 10 years. This workshop draws from this accumulated experience to present the state-of-the-art of thermally driven solar cooling. Presented by European and North American experts, it covers the basics of solar collector technology, open and closed cooling cycles and equipment, current systems experience, including systems in North America, design guidelines and economics of solar cooling.
